Engineering
Nicholas Holaday '16National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) - Safety & Mission Assurance (SMA) Engineer
Iowa State University, B.S. in Aerospace Engineering
I started full-time as a NASA Civil Servant in January of 2021. Since then, I’ve served as a Program Quality Engineer on the Orion Program. The Orion vehicle is a crewed spacecraft that rides to space on top of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) heavy lift vehicle and is set to sustain four crew members on a flight around the moon as part of NASA’s second Artemis campaign mission in early 2026. During Artemis II, Orion will fly humans farther from Earth than ever before and will act as a testbed and proving ground for Orion’s complex life support, communications, and re-entry systems. This aggressive second mission will set up NASA to return humans to the lunar surface during the third iteration of the Artemis campaign. My recent priority supporting Orion has been leading the Artemis I In-Flight Anomaly (IFA) cause investigation and corrective action process, as well as leading the collaboration between our program prime, Lockheed Martin, and International Partner, the European Space Agency, to review, disposition, and close all the Artemis II nonconformances ahead of our upcoming flight. During the Artemis II mission, I will lead the NASA Mission Evaluation Room (MER)’s anomaly investigation process, before beginning the post-flight nonconformance review and Artemis III pre-DD250 (vehicle acceptance process between the program prime to NASA) nonconformance processes. Outside of my Orion tasking, I support the NASA teams developing, building, and testing NASA flight hardware and software, called Government Furnished Equipment (GFE), and have been the Quality Engineer for hardware sent to and used aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Further, I have been leading a multi-year effort to transition the work authorizing document, nonconformance tool, and processes at Johnson Space Center, from an inefficient paper-based approach, to a fully-electronic platform that will tie NASA and contractor inventory management directly to the work being performed, and nonconformances that arise and need to be dispositioned by our teams. This Digital Engineering effort involved Lean Six Sigma Kaizen Events across key stakeholders, introduced me to managing a developer team and substantial budget, and impacted thousands of employees at JSC, our contractor partners, and other NASA centers. The team has released our new tool to the user community, ahead of schedule and under budget, and GFE teams are using it to successfully build, test, and certify space flight hardware and software. If a student or group of students has any interest in aerospace engineering, NASA’s mission, or Quality or Systems engineering, I would love to talk with them further.
I routinely rely on the core principles of integrity, purposeful communication, and academic curiosity that Carmel instilled in me, at work and in my personal interactions with others. Carmel gave me an opportunity to challenge myself with leadership opportunities in athletics, student government, clubs, and service organizations. Those experiences made me comfortable continuing to challenge myself, get involved with the opportunities around me, and want to give back to my community. The encouragement I received from the faculty and staff, and interactions I had with my classmates, especially through faith-based activities like Kairos, continue to shape who I am every day.

Education
Jacob Heidenreich '91Loras College, Associate Professor of Mathematics
Northern Illinois University, BS in Mathematics, BA in English; University of Notre Dame, PhD in Mathematics
I teach mathematics at Loras College. I especially enjoy designing and using educational games in the classroom. I've published one math game and have shared and presented several others at conferences and conventions. You can get free print-and-play versions of my games at my website.
My religion classes at Carmel taught me how to think deeply about what I value and hope to accomplish, and to reflect on whether what I'm doing is getting me there. I've used that experience to establish worthwhile goals in the classroom and plan out how to accomplish those goals. This has helped me make my classroom be more than just learning how to solve equations, but also how to be good members of a group with a common goal.

Paula Castaños '11

Self-Employed Birth Doula
Knox College-BFA
After several years working in reproductive health, I made the switch to become a DONA certified birth doula, educating and advocating for birthing parents to have access to the labor of their dreams. I am also a member of several choral organizations throughout Chicago (I never stopped singing!) and use my voice for social justice movements as well.
Carmel gave me a drive for curiosity. I never would have opened myself to certain careers if I were not willing to open my eyes to what could be in front of me.
