Scholars Program
Generous benefactors have the opportunity to provide an impactful gift to Carmel Catholic students by establishing a scholarship or contributing to an already existing one. Often named in memory of loved ones, these scholarships provide financial assistance to students seeking a Carmel Catholic education.
Alex E. Richardson Memorial Scholarship
Alex Richardson was a dedicated teacher and coach at Carmel High School for Boys from 1966 to 1981. During his time at Carmel, Alex worked in the mathematics department and coached the tennis and golf teams. He was fond of saying, "I do not teach math; I teach kids." He expected the best of his students and players and took great joy in seeing students grasp new concepts and his players succeed. Alex died on April 11, 2006, after a long and courageous illness with cancer.
This award, in addition to all other financial assistance awards, will be given annually to a current student with financial need. A representative of Carmel Catholic's Admission office or other designated Carmel employee will decide the award recipient.
To be selected as a recipient of this scholarship, students must:
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Applicants must be current sophomores, juniors, or seniors in good academic and disciplined standing. (typically earning at least a C-level G.P.A.).
- The recipient must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Arthur J. and Mary C. Lerman Fund
This award, funded by the Arthur J. and Mary Celeste Lerman Foundation, funds the Merit-based Scholarship program annually. This renewable merit-based scholarship recognizes students who earn a composite score within the top-10th percentile on the High School Placement Test (HSPT).
- The student is an incoming freshman meeting academic and discipline standards for admission to Carmel Catholic.
- This Merit-based scholarship renews annually and requires Carmel Catholic High School students to maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average and good discipline standing.
- The students must be in good standing within the CCHS Christian Service Program.
- The admissions staff decides on the annual award recipients based on first-year students' entry test scores.
Arthur M. Baker Scholarship
Arthur M. Baker Jr established this endowment to ensure a place for students needing financial assistance, providing an opportunity to attend CCHS. Arthur Baker also contributed to the ongoing renewal of building facilities through the contribution of the Hesse Center (completed in 1993), the Science Wing (opened in 2004), the Performing Arts Center (opened in 2012), and other areas of the campus. The Baker family has a significant legacy at CarmelCarmel Catholic since the school Carmel Catholic's founding in 1962.
The admissions department staff decides the distribution of the award. To receive consideration for the award, the student must:
- Be a current student, freshman, sophomore, or Junior requesting financial assistance
- Be in good academic and discipline standing.
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process by completing the Stella Maris financial status application.
- The recipient must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
BVM Educator’s Scholarship
Established by the B.V.M. Order to help faculty develop in their profession by helping to pay for continuing education costs, such as completing a Master's degree and other professional development. Current faculty members apply for this award.
BVM Principal Scholarship
Established by the B.V.M. Order to help fund the Merit-based Scholarship program, this renewable merit-based scholarship recognizes students who earn a composite score within the top-10th percentile on the High School Placement Test (HSPT).

Caitlin Duffy ’08 Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship memorializes the short life of Caitlin Duffy '08. Caitlin lived life to the fullest – especially her years at Carmel Catholic High School, where she explored and excelled in sports, academics, performance, and visual arts. She participated in basketball, softball, soccer, and cross country. She was vice president of her class for three years, president of the student council in her senior year, a member of many clubs, and involved in service, and her intense spirituality was an essential aspect of who she was. She loved music and dance, and her involvement in Street Scenes and theater allowed her to make others as happy as she was daily. Caitlin had a vivacious, sparkling, and affectionate personality and considered everyone her "best friend."
Her family wishes to honor Caitlin's memory by assisting an incoming first-year student at Carmel Catholic who graduated from St. Bede School. The selected student will receive a partial scholarship each year at Carmel Catholic High School.
To be selected as a recipient of this scholarship, students must:
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Be an incoming freshman meeting academic and discipline standards for admission to Carmel Catholic.
- The scholarship will stay with the student for four years and will be applied over and above all other financial assistance awards.
- Maintain good academic standing (earning at least a C level G.P.A.) and discipline.
- The family wishes to allow students to submit their application "essays" in formats other than writing to enable the students to express themselves and their needs creatively.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Carmel Endowment Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship financially supports incoming and current students needed to attend Carmel Catholic. This award helps to fulfill the social justice goal of the Carmelites and B.V.M.s, enabling access to a college prep education that allows students to achieve personal, professional, and family goals to build a sustainable future. The admissions staff determines the recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this scholarship, a student must:
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Applicants must be a current student in good academic standing (earning at least a C-level G.P.A.) and discipline standing or an incoming freshman meeting academic and discipline standards.
Class of 1967 Legacy Scholarship
This award honors the commitment of the Class of 1967 to the students of Carmel Catholic High School. The Class of 1967 is Carmel Catholic's second graduating Class. Along with the Class of 1966, this Class pioneered the student traditions and culture at Carmel Catholic High School. Through this endowment, the Class of 1967 wishes to make a Carmel Catholic education accessible to future legacy relatives of the members of this Class and succeeding classes. The Class of '67 is the first Class to create a permanent endowment. Continued donations will help increase the impact that this scholarship will make. - A direct descendent of the Class of 1967 alumni or a direct descendent of other Carmel Alumni if there is no Class of 1967 applicant
- A current recipient must reapply to renew the scholarship for subsequent school years at Carmel and meet all the eligibility requirements.
- A written statement by the applicant describing the importance of receiving a Carmel Catholic education
- Demonstrate the financial need for the scholarship as determined and documented by Carmel's financial assistance program guidelines.
- Be admitted to and enrolled in good academic (cumulative C grade point average) and discipline standing.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.

Cuneo Scholarship
The Cuneo Foundation has generously supported Carmel Catholic's students for many years. The Cuneo Foundation gives need-based scholarships to assist students in catholic high schools, colleges, and universities in the greater Chicago region. These scholarships are designated for young men and women who exhibit academic excellence, a passion for service, and a desire to help create a more just society. The funds assist Carmel in providing tuition assistance to students from low and middle-income families, maintaining the socio-economic diversity of Carmel's student body.
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- You must be a student in good academic (at least a C-level G.P.A.) and discipline standing or an incoming freshman scoring in the 80th percentile or above on the entrance exam.
- As part of the financial aid application process, applicants must write a short statement explaining why they wish to attend Carmel Catholic High School.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Daniel J. Frainey ’77 Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a current freshman continuing their education at Carmel Catholic High School. Recipients receive the award in the spring of the student's freshmen year, and the scholarship will be applied to the student's tuition account the following academic year. This award is granted over and above all other financial assistance awards. To be selected as a recipient of this scholarship, a student must:
- Complete the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance.
- A current freshman student in good academic standing (earning at least a C level G.P.A.) and discipline standing.
- Awarded in the spring of Freshman year to be applied toward the Sophomore year's tuition.
- Demonstrate a dedication to the spirit of education.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Diane and Michael Hettinger Endowment
This award remembers and honors Diane and Michael Hettinger's commitment to Carmel Catholic High School students. Diane worked at Carmel for many years as an Assistant Principal for Carmel for Girls and Carmel High School, a coeducational institution, where she witnessed the long-lasting effects of a Carmel Catholic High School education. A faith-based education and an excellent curriculum provide the atmosphere for spiritual, academic, and personal growth. Diane and Michael are funding this endowment to help future students with financial needs benefit from a Carmel Catholic education.
This award will be given annually to a student with financial need, as well as all other financial assistance awards. A representative committee of Carmel Catholic High School's Admission office or other designated Carmel Catholic High School employee will review the essays and decide the award recipient. This award is granted over and above all other financial assistance awards. To be selected as a recipient of this scholarship, students must:
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Recipients must be current students in good academic and discipline standing (earning at least a C-level G.P.A.) or incoming freshmen scoring in the 80th percentile or above on the entrance exam.

Doc Watson Math Award
This award honors the life of Dr. Robert "Doc" Watson, Carmel's beloved mathematics teacher who taught Carmel students for more than 30 years at Carmel Catholic. His wish is to recognize a Carmel student who exemplifies qualities he most admired; hard work, kindness to fellow students, and a love of learning mathematics. The family of Dr. Watson awards $1,000 to an exemplary junior student with an interest in Mathematics so that his or her education at Carmel Catholic will continue.This award is to be given over and above all other financial assistance awards. To be selected as a recipient of this award, students must:
- Faculty members in the math department chose the recipient
- This award will be given to a rising Junior student continuing his or her education at Carmel Catholic High School
- The award is granted in the spring and applied to the student's tuition account for the following academic year.
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Be a current student in good academic standing (minimum a C-level GPA) and discipline standing.
- Demonstrate qualities of hard work, kindness to fellow students and a love of learning mathematics.
Donald J. and Ann B. Backys Memorial Endowment
This award remembers and honors the Mark and Allison Myers Family. Don and Ann Backys were inspired by the positive experience of Carmel student Charlotte Myers ‘25 and want to help other students experience this positive program.
This award will be given annually to a student with financial need. A representative committee of Carmel Catholic High School's Admission office or other designated Carmel Catholic High School employee decides the award recipient. This award is granted over and above all other financial assistance awards. To be selected as a recipient of this scholarship, students must:

- A student with financial need can be awarded this Scholarship in addition to all other financial assistance awards.

Don Van Erdan Scholarship for the Study of Math & Science
Remembers the legacy of Don VanErden. After 11 years of night school, working full time, and supporting a family, Don Van Erden graduated with a double major in math and physics. Then, he developed a successful career as a mechanical engineer. He eventually helped to create and was the head of the tech center at I.T.W. with 100 plus patents to his name, including the zipper on the Ziploc bag and the plastic rings over a six-pack of soda. Don was a successful engineer and a dedicated husband and father involved in the community.
The recipients receive this award for their potential in engineering and the sciences and for exhibiting the traits that Don himself possessed: determination, perseverance, goal-orientedness, focus, and family values.
Graduating Carmel Catholic seniors committed to attending a four-year college or university receive this award. The award is distributed directly from Carmel to the recipient's college or university institution. The process to receive this award is as follows:
- A graduate of Carmel Catholic High School in good academic and discipline standing
- Complete the blind scholarship application and write an essay.
- A committee selects the recipients from the blind applications.
- The recipient must provide proof of admission through an official invoice and class registration documentation before the start of the freshman semester.
- The award is sent directly to the recipient's university or college.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Eric Bertaud ’88 Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship memorializes the short life of Eric P. Bertaud '88, and has been helping Carmel students for more than 30 years. Following his graduation from Carmel Catholic, Eric was an ROTC graduate of Iowa State University and was training to be a Marine. Eric died as a result of an accident during training. His family wishes to honor his memory by extending assistance to a current Carmel Catholic student by providing a partial one-year scholarship.
Eric Bertaud '88 had good humor and a strong faith commitment. He worked hard to achieve the goals he had set for himself. He exhibited leadership, sportsmanship, and compassion. Carmel High School helped him develop and practice these values, so this scholarship naturally seeks to help students who share similar ideals but cannot continue their studies at Carmel Catholic High School without additional financial assistance. Eric worked hard for academic success while at Carmel; therefore, a student's G.P.A. may be considered as evidence of good academic standing but will not be a determining factor in the selection of the recipients of this scholarship.

Fox Family Freshman Scholarships
Frank A. Belmont Memorial Scholarship
Carmel alumnus Mike Belmont '77, brother of Frank A. Belmont, created the Scholarship to keep the Carmel Catholic and Catholic College Prep education experience accessible to future generations. The Frank A. Belmont Memorial Scholarship provides tuition assistance to current Carmel students who have financial need.
Frank established a legacy in Carmel's history as a teacher, head boys' basketball coach, and Athletic Director. In the mid-80s, he led his teams to the Illinois State Tournament Sweet Sixteen. Frank had a very positive influence on his players and students.
2017 Carmel established its annual alum basketball game in Frank's honor. Former players from all decades return annually, and alumni players may donate to the Scholarship.
A representative of Carmel Catholic's Admission office will decide the award recipient. To receive this award, the student must
- Apply for the Scholarship.

Gordy Ferrigan '70 Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship honors Gordy Ferrigan, '70, who died in 2004. The Ferrigan family established the fund in memory of Gordy Ferrigan, honoring his love of Carmel and desire to help CCHS students experiencing financial need. This endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a current Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior student continuing their education at Carmel Catholic High School. This Scholarship is awarded each spring, and the award will be applied to the student's tuition account during the following academic year. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:
- Complete the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Be a current student in good academic standing (typically earning at least a C-level GPA) and discipline standing.
- Complete a Ferrigan Scholarship application.
- Recipients receive this award in addition to all other financial assistance awards.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Irish Scholarship
The Irish Fellowship Educational and Cultural Foundation is a nonprofit organization established by the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago to assist students of Irish descent at the secondary school level. A member of the admissions staff decides the recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:
- Be of Irish descent at a secondary school.
- The Scholarship is a renewable award distributed in addition to other financial awards.
- Complete the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Be a current student in good academic standing (typically earning at least a C-level GPA) and discipline standing.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Jack and Dorothy Brennan Memorial Scholarship
This award remembers and honors Jack and Dorothy Brennan's commitment to Carmel Catholic High School students. Jack and Dorothy felt strongly that an excellent Catholic Education was essential for the development of all kids. Jack and Dorothy sent six children to Carmel, and four grandchildren also graduated from Carmel. Dorothy was a Carmel faculty member who taught math on the boy's side from 1983 to 1989. They were reliable volunteers for many Carmel events and activities. Jack and Dorothy supported and participated in Street Scenes (Libertyville Irish Pub Room) from 1985 to 1995. A representative of Carmel Catholic's Admission office decides the award recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:

John and Billie Coffey Memorial Scholarship
Philip Coffey established this Scholarship in fond memory of his parents, John and Billie Coffey. His parents instilled in their children the same values expressed in the mission of Carmel Catholic. The Coffey family seeks to enable financially challenged students who desire to excel, pursue life goals, and develop their faith. A representative of Carmel Catholic's Admission office will decide the award recipient.

Jonathan Jeffrey Burandt Scholarship
The Burandt family established this Scholarship to honor the memory of Jonathan Brandt '09. Jonathan was a natural leader during his time at Carmel Catholic. Applicants write an essay describing how their leadership skills as student-athletes positively impacted the Carmel community.
- Graduating seniors who intend to enroll in a four-year college or university.
- Applicants must write an essay about their leadership activities as students in the Carmel community, which the donor will read.
- The recipient must provide proof of admission through an official invoice and class registration documentation and provided before the start of the semester.
- The award is sent directly to the recipient's university or college.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Joyce Masterson Memorial Scholarship
This endowed Scholarship memorializes the life of Mrs. Joyce Masterson, a teacher at Carmel Catholic High School for 26 years. Mrs. Masterson established a reputation for consistently demonstrating deep caring and compassion for her students, colleagues, friends, family, and the greater community. She founded Carmel's Service Club and encouraged students to go beyond their required Christian Service hours to develop relationships with those they could assist through their long-term service. In fond memory of Mrs. Masterson, this Scholarship recognizes a student at Carmel Catholic who has demonstrated the qualities of care and compassion to others with a tuition award. To be chosen as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:
- Be a junior in good academic and discipline standing throughout their years at Carmel Catholic.
- Exemplify the traits of caring and compassion that so many remember about Joyce Masterson.
- Complete an application identifying the student's participation in service activities beyond their required Christian Service.
- One student will be selected per year for one award of $1,000, which will be given over and above any other financial assistance awards.
- Attend Carmel Catholic for their senior year.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Kairos Retreat Fund
The Mudd family is committed to Carmel Catholic students' personal and spiritual growth through the Kairos Retreat program. This Scholarship offsets expenses for conducting the Kairos retreat experience. The Dennis and Ronnie Mudd family have a legacy of support for Carmel through financial, volunteer, and leadership support for many years. Dennis serves the Archdiocese as a Deacon at St. Joseph's Parish. Support for the Kairos program through this Scholarship continues the Mudd family's legacy and support for future generations of Carmel students during their journey of personal and faith discovery while attending Carmel.
Kirsten McWilliams '84 Memorial Scholarship
A group of 44 donors from the class years of 1983, 1984, and 1985 and parents funded the Kirsten McWilliams Memorial Scholarship to honor this dynamic scholar, athlete, and student leader. Kirsten was posthumously inducted into the Carmel Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022. Kirsten (Kirstie to her teammates) led by example as a stand-out basketball, softball, and tennis player; as an NHS and class officer; as a retreat rector; and as a voyageur navigating the waters of Quetico with an intrepid crew led by Sr. Mary Sattgast, BVM. Kirsten leaves a legacy in our Carmel community and a lifelong positive impact on many classmates and teammates.
Competitive and gifted, Kirsten was a natural athlete and the biggest cheerleader for classmates and teammates. One friend recounts, "Our dear friend patiently shot hoops for hours with me, which always ended with both of us laughing so hard because I was so out-matched." In grade school, Kirsten not only excelled in basketball and soccer, but she was also a trailblazer. She was the first girl in Libertyville to play Little League through middle school and was selected each year to play on the traveling all-star team.

Larry J. and Phyllis A. Brooks Scholarship
The Bruning Foundation created this Scholarship in honor of Larry Brooks, who served as the foundation's accountant and financial officer for years. Larry's fondness for Carmel Catholic High School grew as a resident of Mundelein and through his connection to several area parishes.
A representative of Carmel Catholic's Admission office will decide the award recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, the student must:
- Complete the Stella Maris financial assistance application process.
- They are awarded annually to a current sophomore student continuing their education as a Carmel Catholic High School junior.
- The award will be available to the same student in their senior year, provided the Scholarship is financially available.
- A student with financial need is awarded this Scholarship in addition to all other financial assistance awards.
- Be in good academic standing (a GPA of 3.0 or better) and discipline standing.
- Complete the Brooks Scholarship application.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Larry Whittier Memorial Scholarship
This Scholarship honors the life of Lawrence J. (Larry) Whittier, a former coach at Carmel Catholic for 15 years. Larry Whittier's family created this annual Scholarship so that a student's education at Carmel Catholic will continue.
Larry guided our Corsairs as Women's Basketball-Head Coach 1994-1996, Football-Assistant Coach 2004-2009, and Football-Assistant Coach-Volunteer 2010. In addition to his dedication to coaching, Larry and his wife, Diane, sent three sons to Carmel: Wade '82, Thad '85, and Rod '86. A representative of Carmel Catholic's Admission office will decide the award recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:

- The award is granted annually in addition to all other financial assistance awards.
- Be a current student in good academic standing (typically earning at least a C level GPA) and good discipline standing or an incoming freshman.

Lawrence Horcher ’75 Memorial Scholarship
This Scholarship is awarded to a current freshman continuing their education at Carmel Catholic High School. They will be awarded in the spring of the student's freshmen year, and the Scholarship is applied to the student's tuition account the following academic year. A representative of Carmel Catholic's Admission office will decide the award recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, a student must:
- Complete the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance status form.
- Be a current student with good academic performance (typically earning at least a C-level GPA) and good discipline standing.
- Demonstrate a dedication to the spirit of education.
- Recipients receive this award over and above all other financial assistance awards.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Lillian E. Kenny and Rev. Simon J. Kenny, O.Carm. Memorial Scholarship
The Lillian E. Kenny and Fr. Simon J. Kenny, O.Carm. Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to help children in financial need who are being raised by a single parent to attend Carmel Catholic. Lillian Kenny raised two sons as a single parent and overcame financial hardship by sending them to Catholic schools. This fund recognizes the economic challenges that single parents face. Fr. Simon Kenny was one of Lillian's sons who became a Carmelite and served as a faculty member and Dean of Students at Carmel Catholic in the 1970s. The students respected him well during his tenure.
A student with financial needs receives this award in addition to all other financial assistance awards and is applied to the recipient's tuition account. A Carmel Catholic's Admission office representative or other designated Carmel employee will decide the award recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Be a current sophomore, junior, or senior with good academic standing (earning at least a C-level GPA) and good discipline standing.
- Recipients receive this award over and above all other financial assistance awards.
- The applicant must be from a single-parent family and maintain a "B" grade average or above.

Linda R. Schmits Memorial Scholarship
This award honors Linda Schmits and her commitment to Carmel Catholic High School students. Linda firmly believed in Carmel's positive impact on its students. Linda became involved as a volunteer parent while her son, Andrew, attended Carmel. She and Ron served as volunteers for Street Scenes and other volunteer roles. They developed positive relationships with other Carmel parents.
A representative of Carmel Catholic's Admission office will decide the award recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Be in good academic standing (at least a C level GPA) and discipline standing or an incoming freshman
- Recipients receive this award over and above all other financial assistance awards.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
MacLean-Fogg Scholarship
Members of the May family established the Margaret F. and Charles M. May Memorial Scholarship. As lifelong residents of Waukegan, the May family's vision for this Scholarship seeks to increase enrollment opportunities for members of the Waukegan community and St. Anastasia's Parish with demonstrated financial need at Carmel Catholic High School. The recipients are selected during the eighth-grade admission process to Carmel Catholic High School. Four chosen students will receive a non-renewable partial scholarship for their freshman year at Carmel Catholic High School.
The recipient is determined annually and takes into consideration factors such as academic excellence and the desire to attend Carmel Catholic High School. A representative committee of Carmel Catholic High School's Admission office or another designated Carmel Catholic High School employee will review the essays and decide the award recipient.
Award Criteria:
- Complete the admission and registration to attend Carmel Catholic High School.
- This award is for incoming freshman who must apply in the spring of their eighth-grade year.
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- Recipients receive this award over and above all other financial assistance awards.
- Applicants write an essay expressing their desire to attend Carmel, their hopeful experiences, and their reason for seeking financial assistance.
- Eligible students will reside in Waukegan or have demonstrated a connection to St. Anastasia's Parish.
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Margaret F. and Charles M. May Memorial Scholarship
Mary Francis Clarke, B.V.M. Minority Scholarship
Mary Frances Clarke was the foundress of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The scholarship honors her commitment to education, especially for minority groups. The scholarship assists Carmel in providing tuition assistance to minority students from low and middle-income families, maintaining the socio-economic diversity of Carmel's student body.
To be eligible for the award, students must meet several criteria:
- Demonstrate financial need by completing Carmel Catholic High School's financial assistance application process.
- Identify as Native American, Asian, Black, or Hispanic.
- Be an incoming freshman who meets the academic and discipline standards required for admission to Carmel Catholic.
- The admissions staff will determine who receives the award.
- Recipients of this award will receive it in addition to any other financial assistance they may be awarded.
- Students who receive the award must also write a letter of appreciation to the B.V.M Order.
Mary Lou Paddack Memorial Scholarship
This Scholarship was established to honor the memory and life of our beloved mathematics teacher, Mrs. Mary Lou Paddack, who passed away in 2002. Mrs. Paddack was a caring individual who wanted all her students to succeed. Multiple students may receive this award in the same academic year. The Business Office will determine the scholarship amount. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:
- Be in good academic standing and display these qualities:
- Class Preparedness
- Intellectual curiosity
- Hard work
- Leadership
- Willingness to help others
- A current freshman in financial need continuing his or her education at Carmel Catholic High School may apply for this award.
- This Scholarship will be awarded in the spring and applied to the student's tuition account the following academic year.

Matthew Braun Fund
This endowment remembers and honors Matthew Braun '14. Matthew was highly respected by Carmel faculty, classmates, parents, and everyone who came in contact with him. Matthew had a great love for the Carmel community and emulated the attributes of a model Carmel student: honesty, integrity, faith, warmth, and compassion. Matthew participated in the wrestling and football teams for four years, and his teammates voted him to be the varsity team captain for football. He became an example of dedication, discipline, and energy for his teammates. He lead Kairos programs two times and was proud of this important role. This endowment remembers Matthew's very short life and his positive impact on Carmel and those around him. A Carmel Catholic's Admission office representative or other designated Carmel employee will decide the award recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:

Meaghan's Heart – Meaghan Victoria Burandt Scholarship
This Scholarship was established to honor the memory of a 2013 Carmel alumna. Meaghan was a kind-hearted friend to many and gave much of herself in the service of others. This Scholarship is awarded to a student with a heart and soul for putting the needs of others first.
- Graduating seniors who intend to enroll to a four-year college or university.
- Applicants must write an essay about their leadership as a student in the Carmel community that the donor reads.
- The recipient must provide proof of admission through an official invoice and class registration documentation.
- The award is sent directly to the recipient's university or college
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Megan Butz Memorial Scholarship
The Butz family created this scholarship in memory of their daughter, Megan Butz. Her dad, Larry Butz, fondly recalls his daughter as one of the most caring individuals he has ever known. Megan was kind and driven to volunteer and think of others before herself. Whether it was participating on three week-long mission trips during her sophomore, junior, and senior years at Carmel Catholic, multiple Big Brothers Big Sisters programs, or being active in a North Texas nonprofit that provides education and foster programs to eliminate the killing of dogs she was always willing to help causes that held her passion. A Carmel Catholic's Admission office representative or other designated Carmel employee will decide the award recipient. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:

Ryan Meinken ’07 Science Scholarship
The Meinken family established this Scholarship in honor of Ryan Meinken '07, who died in a car accident during his junior year at Carmel Catholic. Ryan had a passion for science and wanted to pursue a career in a science-related field. Carmel Catholic was an important part of Ryan's life. The Business Office will determine the scholarship amount. To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, the student must:
- This endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a current sophomore student continuing his or her education at Carmel Catholic High School.
- This Scholarship is awarded in the spring of the student's sophomore year and applied to the student's tuition account the following academic year.
- The award will be available to the same student in their senior year. The student must retain a 3.0 GPA or better and be in good discipline.
- The recipient's gender alternates each time the Scholarship is granted.
- Students receive this award above all other financial assistance awards.
- Complete a Ryan Meinken Science Scholarship application.
- A letter of appreciation to the donor's family is required to be written by the student.
Serna Center Endowment
The Serna family established a learning resource center honoring past parent Carlos Serna, who ultimately died from a recurring malignant brain tumor in 2008. Carlos suffered from a severe dyslexia, a learning disorder, which was a significant obstacle for Carlos during his education as a youth. He was later officially diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD as an adult. Despite his learning disabilities, he had found ways to cope and had a successful career. Carlos' wife, Sandy Serna, established the center to help students with diagnosed learning challenges who have established IEPs. The center allowed Carmel to provide learning services that were unavailable before the establishment of this endowment. Sandra continues her work to help students with learning challenges, especially those with dyslexia, in the Chicago Public School system.
Sr. Mary Frances McLaughlin, BVM Scholarship
This financial aid award is available because of money received from the Carmel Catholic Community upon the occasion of Sr. Mary Frances McLaughlin, BVM's retirement in 2006. Sr. Mary Fran served as a teacher in Carmel's earliest days and then returned as President from 1996-2006. The community established an endowment in her name in tribute to her dedication to Carmel Catholic.

The parishioners of St. Joe's parish established this award to help with tuition for an 8th-grade boy who will be attending CCHS.

St. Titus Brandsma Scholarship (Carmelite Scholarship)
The Order of the Carmelites established this Scholarship to help minority students attend Carmel.

- Be a current student with good academic performance (at least a C level GPA) and discipline standing or an incoming freshman.
- Recipients receive this award over and above all other financial assistance awards.
- A letter of appreciation to the Carmelite Fathers is required to be written by the student.
The Very Rev. Willian J. Harry, O.Carm. Financial Aid Fund
This endowment honors Very Rev. William J. Harry, O. Carm, Carmel's first president. Fr. Bill served as Carmel of Boys Principal from July 1985 to June 1988 and as Carmel's first president of the combined coeducational Carmel from July 1988 to June 1996. Fr. Bill also led the capital campaign to build the Hesse Center. This Scholarship recognizes his leadership as Carmel transitioned to create a unified school and community, ensuring a bright future for Carmel.
This award will be given annually to a current student(s) under risk to withdraw from Carmel for financial reasons. In cooperation with the business office, a representative of Carmel Catholic High School's Admission office or other designated Carmel Catholic High School employee will decide the recipient(s). The award is applied to the recipient's tuition account and other financial assistance. At a future date, after graduation and the establishment of their career, the recipient could be asked to consider making a gift to Carmel to the fund so that current students might benefit as they did.
To be selected as a recipient of this Scholarship, students must:
- Be a current student in good academic standing (minimum a C-level GPA) and discipline standing.
- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process
- Describe the financial hardship circumstances causing the student to leave
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the Very Reverend William Harry, O. Carm.
Thomas F. Lipo ’77 Memorial Scholarship
This Scholarship is awarded to a current student in Carmel Catholic High School. The student's family must have suffered financial hardship caused by death, serious injury, illness or loss of job of the parent(s)/guardian(s).
- Document the current family's financial hardship
- This award is a one-year grant and is deducted from the recipient's tuition statement.
- Be a current student in good academic standing (C-level GPA) and in good discipline standing or an incoming freshman
- Recipients receive this award over and above all other financial assistance awards.
- A letter of appreciation to the donor is required to be written by the student.
Tony Gaida Memorial Endowment
This award remembers and honors Tony Gaida who was a leading member of the Carmel High School Parent’s club in the 1960s and 1970s. Tony and his wife, Norine, were the proud parents of five Carmel graduates: Patricia ‘69, James ‘71, Timothy ‘75, Thomas ‘75 and Daniel ‘80. Tony was a tireless volunteer at Carmel from its opening in 1962 until the late 1970s. We honor our father’s memory with this endowment to assist those with financial needs to enable them to attend Carmel Catholic, the school that meant so much to him.
A representative of Carmel Catholic's Admission office will decide the award recipient.

- Show financial need by completing the Carmel Catholic High School financial assistance application process.
- A student with financial need can be awarded this Scholarship in addition to all other financial assistance awards.
- Be a current student in good academic and discipline standing. (typically earning at least a C-level GPA) or an incoming freshman
- The student must write a letter of appreciation to the donor's family.
Young Family Scholarship Program
The Young family has been blessed over the years by having numerous family members attend and graduate from Carmel Catholic High School. The family wishes to continue their legacy of supporting Carmel's education mission by providing incoming students with significant support. The Young Family Scholarship Program's mission is to provide six Carmel students who have demonstrated financial needs funding support to offer them the opportunity to participate and thrive at Carmel Catholic. Qualifying families who have clearly committed to supporting their children financially and spiritually for four years will be a priority. A total of six scholarships are awarded $5,000 annually. Once a student receives the initial award, the student will receive the award until graduation. The Young Family Scholarship Program also supports Carmel's 2050 Scholarship program to assist and support first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students. Students admitted to the 2050 Scholarship program will receive financial, academic, and social support to help them grow and flourish while at Carmel and beyond. To be selected as a recipient of either program
- Parents/Guardians must complete the CCHS financial assistance application process and meet the financial requirements for each program.
- Parents/guardians must also complete an application for a Stella Maris Grant.
- Be in good academic standing (C-level or higher GPA).
- Be in good discipline standing.
- 2050 Program applicants must be first-generation college-bound.
