This grant builds directly on the work Carmel Catholic faculty and staff started during the 2025-2026 school year when they undertook a year of formation on what it means to be human in a world increasingly impacted by AI.
With this grant, Carmel Catholic has now moved into the next phase of their work: Teaching for Human Flourishing in an AI-Complemented World. Throughout the summer and during this year, Carmel Catholic’s team will translate last year’s theological and educational foundation into practical classroom skills and tools. This includes an all-faculty launch in early August, professional development throughout the year, and hands-on classroom application. The guiding question for this year’s work is straightforward but important: if AI can increasingly help with surface-level tasks, how should Catholic educators form students to achieve their deepest human potential, allowing them to flourish in a world that will be dramatically changed by AI.
Carmel Catholic’s work is grounded in the latest scientific research alongside the longstanding principles of our Catholic faith, which describe the attributes of what make us human: dignity, embodiment, love, transcendence, and agency (DELTA). Our goal is to treat AI holistically, as an opportunity that impacts the totality of our personal and societal well-being, weaving it into our mission of calling students to see deep into the truth, beauty, and goodness of creation and discern their vocation.
In September, a team of Carmel Catholic faculty will present at University of Notre Dame’s Summit on AI, Faith and Human Flourishing, hosted by The Notre Dame Institute for Ethics and the Common Good.
