Summer School Classes

The courses listed in this booklet are offered by Carmel Catholic High School for
Summer School 2011.  The courses actually taught will be determined based on the
enrollment in the courses.  There are limited places available in each class.  Students
will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Registration

The registration deadline for Summer School 2011 is Friday, April 29th, 2011.  In some courses there are limited places available.  Students will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.  A course may be closed prior to April 29, 2011.

Registration may be completed by bringing the registration form and tuition/fees
to Mr. Brian Tekampe in room 206.  Registration is not complete until full payment is received.  The forms may also be mailed to: Mr. Brian Tekampe , Carmel Catholic High School, One Carmel Parkway, Mundelein, IL 60060. 

There will be an opportunity to register at the 8th Grade Registration, March 10, 2011, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Tuition and Fees

All tuition and fees must be paid in full at the time of registration for the class.  The
cost of each course is listed in the course description.

Refund Policy

  1. If you are registered for a course and you are unable to take the class, you must notify the Summer School Principal prior to May 6, 2011 in order to receive a complete refund for the class.

  2. If you notify the Summer School Principal after May 6, 2011, there will be norefund.

  3. If you are dropped from a course because of attendance or discipline issues, there will be no refund.

  4. If Carmel Catholic cancels a course because of insufficient enrollment, you will receive a full refund.

Attendance Policy for Credit Classes

Attendance is extremely important in all credit classes.  You are expected to be there for every day of class.

If there is a legitimate illness and you must miss one day, you must notify the Summer School Principal on the morning of the day you are ill.  Either call Mr. Brian Tekampe at (847) 566-3000 x425 and leave a voice mail message or e-mail Mr. Tekampe at btekampe@carmelhs.org.

Depending on the course, missing class could affect your grade.  Doctor appointments, job requirements, vacation days, court, and such are not acceptable excuses to miss at any time.

The semester exam must be taken at the scheduled time for the class.  You may
not leave early on the last day of class. If you miss more than one day, for any reason, you will be dismissed from the class.  Chronic tardiness (time in minutes) will be deducted from the one absent day allowed.

Discipline

All of the regular discipline policies apply during Summer School except for the dress
code.  Students who fail to comply with the discipline policies will be dismissed.  If
a student is dismissed from summer school because of discipline, there will be no refund of tuition or fees.

Dress Code

Casual dress is permitted for summer school classes.  Jeans and shorts of walking length are permitted.  Appropriate shirts/blouses are required.  No halter-tops, bare midriffs, see-through blouses, or sundresses are permitted.  Shoes are required.  Sandals and athletic shoes are permitted.  Young men are expected to be clean-shaven.  Shaved areas on the head are not allowed.  Hair is to be kept neat and clean, and young men may not wear their hair longer than collar length.  Hair color other than natural colors is not allowed.

Grades

Grades in the credit classes will be mailed home by the end of July 2010.  The summer school grade will appear on the first semester report card and the credit will be included in the cumulative credits and cumulative GPA at the end of the semester following the summer school session.

Books

Books, when required, are need on the first day of class, Wednesday, June 8.  You will receive information for ordering books in the summer school letter sent to participants in mid-May.

Non-Credit Classes

Study Skills– S111

June 14-24
8:00 to 10:00 a.m., Monday to Thursday
Grades:  9 – 11
Cost:  $200 Payable to Carmel Catholic High School

This is a class focusing on learning strategies for success in high school.
Through this course students can manage their study time and improve their comprehension no matter what grades they are currently achieving. An additional benefit is that students will save time by learning efficient, scientific study systems that begin to work immediately.  Students will learn how to utilize and manage their time better.  Skills include preparing for tests, earning higher grades, reading and taking useful notes, using reference sources, remembering information, building vocabulary, reading and interpreting visual aids, and reducing test anxiety.

High School Algebra and Composition Skills – S214

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday to Friday
Grade:  9
Cost:  $160 Payable to Carmel Catholic High School

This class focuses on the math and writing skills that students need to thrive in high school.  During one week students will be introduced to and/or review college-prep algebra and its concepts.  In the other week, they will work on composition skills and terminology necessary for writing confidently across a high school curriculum.

Creative Writing – S215

Do you enjoy reading and writing but rarely find time to do so? Have you been looking for a way to learn new creative writing techniques and take the time to practice them in a fun, supportive environment?  This Creative Writing course is designed as an enrichment course for students entering grades 6-9 who are interested in exploring their own writing practice through exposure to a variety of creative writing pieces. This course will focus on how to read like a writer and how the use of tone, point of view, voice, and symbolism can be used to enhance one’s writing.

Drumline Camp – S217

Camp: June 21-July 2nd, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday
Grades: 9 – 12
Cost: $160 Payable to Carmel Catholic High School

This class is designed to further develop the students’ understanding and ability to perform rudimental drumming.  The top forty Percussive Arts Society Rudiments, technique of drumming and eye hand coordination will be covered in this class.  This class is a continuation of the Instrumental Program at CCHS.  If you are planning on playing in the CCHS Instrumental program as a percussionist, it is required that you take this class, including incoming freshmen.

Cost: $575 plus Lab Fee of $45.00. Total: $620 Payable to Carmel Catholic High School
Book: a state book, will be given on 1st day of class

Students acquire extensive skills and knowledge in the Microsoft Office Suite with the use of Word, Excel, and Power Point.  Students will also be exposed to the basic concepts of Publisher.  The basics of Windows Operating Systems are discussed with emphasis placed on file management and vocabulary.  Students develop Internet searching skills with an emphasis on Internet safety, ethics, and cyber bullying. Students will investigate current media technologies.

Physical Education (Co-ed) - #826

June 8 – July 1, 8:00 to 11:45 a.m., Monday to Friday
Grades: 9 – 12
Cost:  $575 plus Activity Fee of $30.  Total: $605 Payable to Carmel Catholic High School

Credit: .5 One semester

This course fulfills one-half of the PE requirement.  It focuses on lifetime activities including fitness, golf, tennis, bowling, strength training and much more. 

Students will walk to some locations that are not on campus to engage in some of the required activities.  In some cases, the students will meet at locations which are off campus to participate in required activities.  It will be the responsibility of the student/parents to provide transportation for these activities.

Health is a semester course that focuses on personal health, with emphasis on identifying, implementing and maintaining health-enhancing behaviors.  Health presents a broad range of topics:  Leading a Healthy Life, Activity and Health, Nutrition and Healthy Living, CPR and First Aid, Safety Education, Substance Use and Abuse, and Safe and Healthy Relationships. 

Film Appreciation - #165

June 8 – July 1, 8:00 to 11:45 a.m., Monday to Friday
Grades: 11 – 12
Cost:  $575 Payable to Carmel Catholic High School
Credit: .5 One semester

Film Appreciation explores the history of cinema with a focus on film as an art form.  Narrative structure is emphasized, with ample time given to studying the craft of filmmaking.  Skills such as screenwriting, editing, directing, lighting and cinematography are examined. 

Introduction to Journalistic Writing - #172

June 8 – July 1, 8:00 to 11:45 a.m., Monday to Friday
Grades: 9-10-11-12
Cost: $575 Payable to Carmel Catholic High School
Book: Inside Reporting
Credit: .5 One semester

The student who enrolls in Introduction to Journalistic Writing will be publishing, communicating, creating, critically thinking, analyzing and writing throughout the course.  The course covers the entire process of journalism: history, legal and Christian ethical components and the organization of a publication.  Newsgathering, writing, editing, interviewing, deadlines, layout, design and current publication trends are emphasized.  The student’s work may be published in Crossroads, the school newspaper.

U.S. Government Honors - #542

June 8 – July 1, 8:00 to 11:45 a.m., Monday to Friday
Grade: 12
Prerequisite: At least one semester of U.S. History Honors #530 or U.S.                    History Advanced Placement #520 and signature of U.S.                    History teacher
Book: None
Cost: $575 plus course materials fee and transportation fee of $20.           Total: $595 Payable to Carmel Catholic High School.
Credit: .5 One Semester

This course fulfills the Social Studies U.S. Government requirement.  It examines the American political system, the key concepts of the democratic process and the elements of responsible citizenship.  Students engage in a study of the government of Illinois and are required to pass a comprehensive examination on the U.S. and Illinois constitutions.

Because this is an honors level course, students are expected to relate primary source readings to contemporary political issues and events.  This course covers more information at a deeper and more thorough level than American Government #543.  This course provides a strong background in government for the college bound student planning to major in one of the social studies.

This course fulfills the Social Studies U.S. Government requirement.  It examines the American political system, the key concepts of the democratic process, and the elements of responsible citizenship.  The students engage in a study of the government of Illinois and are required to pass a comprehensive examination on the U.S. Constitution and the Illinois Constitution.

Research and Technology for High School, College, and Beyond Online Class - #181

June 8 – July 1
Grade: 12
Prerequisite: None
Book: None
Cost: $575 plus course materials fee
Credit: .5 One semester

The purpose of the class is to develop basic understandings of the research process, the types and uses of information, and the use of Web 2.0 technologies to collaborate with others. Students will learn the process necessary to be successful researchers, including strategies for reading and analyzing information and data from a variety of different sources, organizing their work with notes and outlines, creating research questions and theses, and synthesizing information. Students will also learn about strategies that will improve their abilities to work in groups and collaborate. All of these strategies will be enhanced through the use of wikis, clouds, chats, social networks, podcasts, screencasts, and vodcasts.

Students will learn about a variety of sources of information and how to use them effectively. Students will hone their skills throughout the semester and will demonstrate their mastery of skills by completing a final creative project that will allow students to research more in depth a discipline of their choice.

Students will use many online resources, including watching vodcasts, listening to podcasts, and interacting with the teacher and other classmates on their own time. Extensive support will be available to students, but students should have some knowledge of general internet tools such as email, social networks, blogs, and YouTube.
